“It's just the most amazing thing to love a dog, isn't it? It makes our relationships with people seem as boring as a bowl of oatmeal.”
― John Grogan, ***Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World’s Worst Dog***

I finished listening to John Grogan’s memoir on a rainy Saturday afternoon, lying down and fully expecting a sweet, funny story about a wildly misbehaved Labrador retriever. And yes, Marley is funny. He’s chaotic. He’s the canine equivalent of a runaway shopping cart in a crowded parking lot—full speed ahead, no concern for property damage, dignity, or anyone’s blood pressure. He destroys things. He embarrasses his owners. He tested every ounce of patience John and Jenny Grogan possessed.

But that’s not really why this book stayed with me.

What makes ***Marley and Me*** so special is the way Grogan captures the ordinary, sacred mess of a life shared with a dog. Marley isn’t a perfectly trained movie pup with a bandana and a charming trick. He’s difficult, needy, exuberant, and frequently ridiculous. Yet he is also loyal in that bone-deep, no-questions-asked way dogs seem to do better than anyone else. Through new jobs; a growing family; moves; doubts; exhaustion; and all the complicated seasons that adulthood throws at us, Marley is there—tail wagging, heart wide open, probably about to knock someone over.

That’s the magic of this memoir. It understands that loving a dog isn’t a side story. It becomes part of the architecture of your life. You measure time by the pets you’ve loved: the first walk, the favorite sleeping spot, the gray around the muzzle, the day you realize they’re slowing down. And somehow, Grogan turns those familiar moments into something that feels intensely personal, even if you’ve never met Marley—or owned a Labrador with the destructive capabilities of a tiny hurricane.

I’ll be honest: my earbuds were in serious danger of shorting out by the end because tears were rolling straight into my ears. On a rainy Saturday, no less. The atmosphere was practically showing off.

So, consider yourself warned. ***Marley and Me*** will make you laugh at the absurdity of dog ownership, appreciate the tender chaos of family life, and then emotionally body-slam you when you least expect it. If you reach the end without tears, you may want to seek out a therapist—or at the very least, have your tear ducts checked.

***Marley and Me*** by John Grogan is a warm, witty memoir about a young couple, John and Jenny, who bring home an adorable yellow Labrador puppy and quickly learn that adorable does not necessarily mean manageable. Marley grows into a larger-than-life dog with boundless energy, questionable judgment, and a remarkable talent for turning everyday life into a full-scale adventure.

As John and Jenny navigate careers, marriage, moves, parenthood, and all the unpredictable milestones of adulthood, Marley remains a constant—sometimes lovable, sometimes exasperating, and almost always in the middle of some fresh disaster. From obedience-school mishaps to household chaos, his antics provide plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. But beneath the chewed furniture and shattered peace lies a story about the comfort, loyalty, and joy that a beloved pet can bring to a family.

Told with humor and enormous affection, ***Marley and Me*** is more than a book about “the world’s worst dog.” It’s a tender reflection on growing up, building a life with the people you love, and discovering that the messiest companions can leave the deepest paw prints on your heart.

This isn’t just a book for dog people—although, dog people may need a strategically placed designated box of tissues to get through it. It’s for anyone who has loved something imperfectly and completely and then realized that the chaos was part of the gift. Here is why you will fall in love with ***Marley and Me***:

#### Marley is gloriously, hilariously imperfect

He isn’t the obedient, polished kind of dog who sits politely in holiday photos. Marley is a lovable menace with too much energy, too little self-control, and a gift for creating absolute havoc. You’ll laugh because his misbehavior is outrageous—and because, if you’ve ever had a pet, you’ll recognize that familiar “I cannot believe you just did that” feeling.

#### It understands that pets are family

Grogan doesn’t treat Marley like a cute accessory or a charming subplot. He writes about him as a true member of the family: present for the mundane days, the major milestones, and the moments when life feels too hard to carry alone.

#### It celebrates the beautiful mess of ordinary life

Marriage, work, babies, bills, moves, exhaustion—adult life can feel like a long to-do list with laundry piled on top. This book finds meaning in those imperfect years and reminds us that the moments we remember most often happen right in the middle of the mess.

#### You’ll see your own beloved animal in Marley

While reading this book, my husband reunited with Sinbad, the black Lab of his 20s. For me, it was Wilham and Travis. Maybe your dog stole food from the counter, barked at invisible enemies, or developed a mysterious hatred for the vacuum cleaner. Maybe your cat had an attitude problem that could’ve qualified as a personality disorder. Whatever the species, this book has a way of bringing your own pet memories rushing back.

#### The humor feels earned, never forced

Marley’s antics are funny because they come from real life—the kind of chaos you can laugh about only after you’ve survived it. Grogan shares the disasters with honesty and affection, letting the comedy grow naturally from a dog determined to live at maximum volume.

#### It reminds you what unconditional love looks like

Marley may not understand schedules, clean floors, personal space, or why eating drywall is frowned upon. But he understands devotion. His love is wholehearted, uncomplicated, and freely given—the kind that meets you at the door as though you are the best thing that has ever happened.

#### It will make you feel deeply, in the best way

***Marley and Me*** knows how to make you laugh one minute and reach for tissues the next. It doesn’t manipulate your emotions; it simply tells the truth about loving a pet: the joy is enormous because the love is real.

#### It leaves you softer than it found you

By the final page, you may find yourself looking at your own pet a little longer, forgiving their latest act of household sabotage a little faster, and feeling grateful for every muddy paw print, shed hair, and interruption to your day.

***The Art of Racing in the Rain*** by Garth Stein
Part of the RWW Paws, Pages, and Plot Twists series. Narrated by Enzo, a wise and devoted dog, this novel follows his life with race-car driver Denny Swift as Denny faces love, fatherhood, ambition, and heartbreaking challenges. The book was a New York Times bestseller and won the 2009 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award. Like ***Marley and Me***, it finds huge emotional truth in the bond between a dog and his person—but Enzo brings a thoughtful, soulful perspective that may have you staring at your own dog as if they’ve been secretly judging your life choices all along. ***Dog Years*** by Mark Doty
In this deeply personal memoir, poet Mark Doty reflects on life with his beloved dogs as he and his partner live through illness, love, loss, and the changing shape of a shared life. Doty is a National Book Award–winning poet, and ***Dog Years*** was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. It carries the same understanding that pets don’t merely accompany our lives—they witness them, absorb them, and somehow make even the hardest chapters more bearable.

***Merle’s Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog*** by Ted Kerasote
Kerasote tells the true story of Merle, a free-spirited dog who chooses a life with him, while exploring what dogs need to flourish and what humans can learn by treating them with greater respect. The book was a New York Times bestseller and received the 2008 Dog Writers Association of America Maxwell Award for Best Book. If you loved Marley’s larger-than-life personality, Merle will charm you for a different reason: he’s not a furry wrecking ball but a dog whose intelligence and independence make every page feel like a conversation between species.

***A Dog’s Purpose*** by W. Bruce Cameron
Told through the eyes of a dog who experiences several lives and owners, this novel follows one loyal soul as he searches for the meaning behind why dogs are here—and whom they are meant to love. It was a New York Times bestseller and inspired a major motion-picture adaptation. This one shares ***Marley and Me’s*** big-hearted belief that dogs make our lives better simply by loving us with every ounce of themselves, even when we don’t quite deserve it.

***Because of Winn-Dixie*** by Kate DiCamillo
A lonely young girl finds a scruffy stray dog at a Florida supermarket, and his irresistible friendliness helps her build unexpected connections in a new town. It was a Newbery Honor Book and won the Mark Twain Readers Award. Although written for younger readers, it has the same warm, hopeful understanding that a dog can crack open a closed-off heart—and occasionally create the kind of community humans struggle to build on their own.

***A Dog Named Boo*** by Lisa J. Edwards
This memoir tells the true story of Boo, a puppy with developmental challenges whom Edwards adopts, trains, and ultimately sees become a remarkable therapy dog and reading companion for children. It became a New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for the 2012 Dog Writers Association of America Maxwell Award. Marley may have been “the world’s worst dog,” while Boo begins as the dog many people would have underestimated; both stories will remind you that love has a funny way of revealing possibility where others see only trouble.

***My Dog Tulip*** by J. R. Ackerley
This candid memoir follows Ackerley’s unconventional, difficult, and fiercely beloved German shepherd, Tulip, as their relationship develops into an unforgettable portrait of devotion and companionship. It is widely regarded as a classic of animal literature and was adapted into an award-winning animated film that earned a 2010 Annecy International Animation Film Festival nomination. Like Grogan, Ackerley refuses to sanitize pet ownership: Tulip is complicated, exasperating, and profoundly loved, which makes this a perfect match for readers who understand that the most unforgettable animals are rarely the easiest ones.
