Ages & Pages: BOOK LISTS

Age matters. A lot.

My birthday is coming up next month. It's not your everyday birthday. It is one of those milestone occasions that marks a shift in the decade for my age group. My husband, who is six months older than me, has effortlessly embraced our new age with the grace and vigor of a genuine storybook hero. I think I'm ready, maybe.

Because of the impending transformation, I've had age and aging on my mind. Naturally, spending most of my time engrossed in books has led me to think about the ages of the fictional characters presented on each page.

Have you ever noticed how certain books just click with you, as if the protagonist could be your best friend, sibling, or even your future or past self? That feeling isn’t accidental. One of the most compelling reasons readers fall in love with stories is the ability to see themselves in the characters, especially when it comes to age.

Why Age-Relatable Protagonists Resonate

Stories are more than just entertainment—they’re mirrors and windows. When we recognize ourselves in a book’s main character, it often deepens our connection to the story and draws us further into their world. Age matters in building that bond. Characters who are our age typically face similar challenges, joys, and growth moments, making their journeys feel more personal. Likewise, seeing someone our age navigate their struggles validates our own feelings and experiences.

It's all relative depending on where you fall in the age spectrum. Younger readers may look up to slightly older characters for guidance, while adults revisit the experiences of their youth through relatable protagonists.

To commemorate my birthday, I decided to compile a blog series of book lists called "Ages & Pages." Here is what it entails.

What to Expect From This Series

In this blog post series, you'll see diverse book lists organized by protagonist age groups, including:

  • Small Voices, Big Stories: Books with Child Protagonists
  • Heroes in High Tops: Teen Protagonists
  • Protagonists in Their Prime: The 20-Something Edition
  • Midlife in the Middle: Novels with Protagonists Aged 30–59
  • Suddenly Seniors: Books with Protagonists aged 60-69
  • Vintage Vitality: Fiction’s Lively 70-Somethings
  • Octogenarian Outliers: Fiction’s Finest in Their Eighties
  • Late Bloomers: Heroes Aged 90 and Beyond

Each post will highlight books that prominently feature the ages of the characters, highlighting not only their personalities but also the distinct perspectives they have on the world. I’ll explore how their age shapes the story and why these books strike a chord with readers in that demographic.

Who Is This Series For?

  • Readers searching for stories that mirror their own experiences, whether they are nostalgically looking back or seeking insights for the future.
  • Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and educators hoping to recommend books to children and teens at particular life stages.
  • Book clubs aiming to choose reading lists that span generations.
